As per Routers, Water pollution is a major challenge in India with nearly 70% of India’s water contaminated impacting three in four Indians. One of the causes of Water pollution is the Nirmalya pollution. Nirmalya is flowers and other articles of religious offerings which become stale. Ganpati Visarjan (Immersion of Lord Ganesha’s idols) is one such occasion where Nirmalya pollution is caused. While the festival is celebrated with zest and happiness, we at Rotary Club of Panvel Elite wanted to ensure that we keep the pollution away from this wonderful festival. Rotary Club Of Panvel Elite, Rotaract Club of Panvel Elite along with 10 other Rotary and Rotaract clubs did a synergy project called ‘NIRMALYA ABHIYAN’ on 7th and 12th September at Khanda Pond, Panvel. Purpose of it was to help the Panvel Municipal Corporation to collect and segregate ‘Nirmalya’ during Ganpati visarjan to Khanda pond, it was then further sent to CIDCO for recycling and converting it into organic fertilizer. Along with collecting Nirmalya we also tried to create awareness among the people about the pollution caused by the immersion of this nirmalya into the water. The project was a great success, giving Rotarians and Rotaractors a chance to step forward to help prevent water pollution.
